ER5183 vs ER5356 for 5083 Aluminum: Filler Metal and RFQ Guide

ALUMINUM FILLER METAL SELECTION

ER5183 and ER5356 are not automatic substitutes just because both are aluminum-magnesium filler metals.

When the base material is 5083 aluminum, the approved welding procedure, required joint properties, service environment, filler classification and delivery form must be checked together before a purchase order is issued.

Quick answer: ER5183 was developed for high-magnesium base alloys such as 5083 where higher as-welded strength and demanding structural service may be important. ER5356 is a widely used aluminum-magnesium filler with broad fabrication use. The correct choice is not determined by availability alone. Follow the drawing, governing code, approved WPS and required weld properties. If a document specifies ER5183, do not replace it with ER5356 without engineering approval.

Start with the 5083 Base Material and the WPS

“5083 aluminum” is not a complete welding specification. Record the product form, temper, thickness, joint design and applicable material standard. Marine plate, a formed component and a repair part may have different governing documents and acceptance requirements. The filler must be compatible with the approved procedure for that exact work.

A filler comparison article cannot qualify a welding procedure. It can identify the questions that the buyer, welding engineer and supplier must resolve. Ask which filler classification appears on the drawing or WPS, which standard edition governs the purchase, and whether the customer or classification body requires a specific approval.

Substitution control: a quotation for ER5356 does not satisfy an ER5183 requirement unless the responsible engineering authority approves the change. Similar alloy families do not make two classifications interchangeable.

Strength Is a Weld-System Requirement

ER5183 is associated with high-magnesium base alloys where higher as-welded strength may be required. That does not mean every ER5183 weld has one universal strength value. Joint design, base-metal condition, process variables, shielding, heat input, workmanship and the test method all affect the result. Use the governing specification and qualified procedure for acceptance values.

Likewise, ER5356 should not be described simply as a “weaker” wire. It may be the approved and practical filler for many aluminum fabrications. The commercial decision is whether the offered classification meets the specific design and procedure—not which alloy has the stronger marketing description.

Check Service Temperature and Corrosion Exposure

High-magnesium aluminum filler metals require a service-temperature review. Do not select ER5183 or ER5356 solely from room-temperature mechanical-property tables when the assembly will operate for sustained periods at elevated temperature. State the minimum and maximum service temperatures in the RFQ and obtain engineering confirmation.

Marine or chloride exposure also requires more than an alloy name. Joint geometry, drainage, crevices, contact with dissimilar metals, coating condition and maintenance influence corrosion performance. For a critical marine structure, identify the environment, governing marine specification and any third-party approval requirement before ordering the filler.

MIG Wire and TIG Rod Must Be Ordered Separately

The classification identifies the filler alloy; it does not complete the delivery description. Continuous MIG wire must match the feeder, liner, drive rolls, contact tip and package interface. Straight TIG rod must match the approved manual procedure, diameter and cut length.

State the process form explicitly. Include diameter, spool or reel details, net package weight, TIG cut length where applicable, quantity and required lot identification. A request for “5183 welding wire” can otherwise produce a technically related but operationally unusable offer.

Documents and Inspection Points

  • Filler classification and governing standard/edition
  • Manufacturer, product identification and lot or batch identification
  • Chemical-composition documentation required by the purchase specification
  • Diameter, dimensional tolerance, surface condition and winding or straightness requirements
  • Package form, net weight and product marking
  • Required marine, customer or third-party approval for the manufacturing location
  • Storage and handling controls needed to keep the filler clean and dry

Do not infer a certificate, approval or test result from a product name or photograph. State the required document before quotation and verify that the document applies to the supplied lot and manufacturing location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ER5183 always better than ER5356 for 5083 aluminum?

No. ER5183 may be selected for higher as-welded performance on 5083 and similar alloys, but “better” depends on the approved procedure, design requirement, service and acceptance standard.

Can ER5356 replace ER5183 if it is easier to obtain?

Not without review. Availability does not authorize a filler-classification substitution. Obtain approval from the responsible engineering authority and update the applicable procedure or purchase document when required.

What should a buyer send with an ER5183 inquiry?

Send the base-metal specification, approved filler classification, process form, diameter, package, quantity, WPS or drawing reference, service conditions and document or approval requirements.
