7075 Aluminum Plate Applications: Where It Fits—and Where It Does Not

7075 aluminum plate is chosen for high-strength, weight-sensitive machined parts—not as a universal upgrade from 6061. Its value is strongest where mechanical performance justifies higher material cost, more careful corrosion control and limited weldability.

Quick selection answer: consider 7075 for highly loaded machined components, fixtures and aerospace-type structures when the drawing and standard require it. Choose another alloy when fusion welding, decorative anodizing, severe corrosion exposure or economical general fabrication dominates.

  • Precision machinery: tooling plates, fixtures and high-load components where stiffness-to-weight and machinability matter.

Welding and corrosion limits

7075 is generally not selected for conventional fusion-welded structural fabrication because the heat-affected zone and cracking risk require special consideration. In humid, marine or dissimilar-metal assemblies, protective finish, sealing, drainage and galvanic isolation belong in the design.

Machining and Inspection

For thick plate or high material-removal ratios, define stress-relieved temper, roughing sequence, intermediate inspection and final flatness. Mechanical properties should be taken from the governing standard for the actual thickness and test direction.
