6061 Aluminium Coil
6061 aluminium coil is a heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si-Cu rolled product supplied for customers who need continuous material for slitting, cutting, forming and fabricated components. Specify the governing standard, temper, thickness, width, coil dimensions and inspection documents so the quotation matches the intended process.
6061 Aluminium Coil Supply Range
| Alloy | 6061 / UNS A96061 |
|---|---|
| Common tempers | O, T4 and T6; final availability is confirmed against thickness and order requirements |
| Common standards | ASTM B209/B209M; EN 485 and EN 573-3; other agreed specifications can be reviewed with the RFQ |
| Thickness | 0.5–6.0 mm |
| Width | 100–2000 mm |
| Common coil ID | 508 mm or 610 mm |
| Surface | Mill finish; surface condition and protective requirements should be stated in the order |
| Processing | Slitting, cut-to-length and recoiling to confirmed dimensions |
| Documentation | Material certificate and dimensional, surface or other agreed inspection records |
Ordering note: thickness and width alone are not enough for a coil RFQ. Include coil ID, maximum OD or coil weight, edge condition and downstream process.
Selecting the Temper
Do not substitute one temper for another using alloy number alone. Temper, thickness and the governing specification determine the applicable mechanical-property limits.
Application and Fabrication Checks
| Purchasing situation | What to confirm before ordering |
|---|---|
| Structural panels, covers and housings | Temper, flatness after cutting, surface condition and joining method |
| Transport and industrial fabricated parts | Forming direction, bend radius, welded-zone design and final corrosion protection |
| Slit strip or stamped components | Slit width, width tolerance, edge condition, burr direction and coil weight limits |
| Machined parts cut from coil | Required thickness tolerance, flatness, residual-stress sensitivity and machining allowance |
Important limitation: welding locally reduces the strength of heat-treated 6061. T6 material also has less forming latitude than O or T4. Confirm the fabrication route instead of selecting only by nominal strength.
Inspection, Certificates and Packing
Information Required for a Quotation
- Alloy and temper: for example, 6061-O, 6061-T4 or 6061-T6
- Applicable standard and any project-specific acceptance requirements
- Thickness, width and tolerances
- Coil ID, maximum OD or target coil weight
- Surface, edge condition and protective-film requirements
- Quantity, delivery destination and required inspection documents
- Drawing or processing details when slitting, stamping or tight bending is involved
6061 Aluminium Coil FAQ
What is the main difference between 6061-T4 and 6061-T6 coil?
T4 retains more forming capability, while T6 is artificially aged to a higher-strength condition. The correct choice depends on whether forming occurs before or after the final heat-treatment stage.
Can 6061-T6 aluminium coil be bent?
It can be bent when the thickness, bend radius and grain direction are suitable, but it is less tolerant of tight forming than O or T4 material. Provide the bend requirement for review.
Which standard is commonly specified for 6061 aluminium coil?
ASTM B209/B209M is commonly used for aluminium sheet and plate products, including coil supplied within its scope. EN 485 with EN 573-3 may be specified for European orders. The purchase order should name the governing standard.
What dimensions are needed for a coil quotation?
State thickness, width, coil ID and either maximum OD or target coil weight. Also specify temper, tolerance, surface, edge condition, quantity and required inspection documents.
